The annual Drunk Driving Audit showed there were 870 fatal crashes in 2012, up from 834 in the 2011 audit. Of the fatal crashes in 2012 , 36.1 percent involved drugs or alcohol, up from 35.6 percent in 2011.
Downstate Wayne County, as might be expected, had the most crashes with 44,133. But it was actually near the bottom of the crash rate list per 10,000 people.
Ontonagon and Iron counties had the most crashes per 10,000 people, and Keweenaw County led the fatal crash rate at 4.5 per 10,000 people.
