In two 5-4 decisions, the high court struck down the federal Defense of Marriage Act and a challenge involving California’s voter-approved ban on same-sex marriage.
Susan Horowitz, an activist and publisher with Pride Source Media group sees this as another step toward eventally legalizing same sex marriage in Michigan and the rest of the nation.
The justices said DOMA essentially denied equal protection under the law. The prop 8 challenge was shot down due to lack of standing, essentially allowing same-sex marriages to resume in California.
An effort is also expected in Michigan to ask voters to repeal the state’s ban on same sex marriage in 2016.
