MARQUETTE, MI – (Great Lakes Radio News) – The Marquette City Police and Fire Departments were called out yesterday afternoon to rescue a woman after she jumped into Lake Superior from Black Rocks on Presque Isle.
Police say they received the call at 3 p.m. of a swimmer in distress. The woman had been with a group of students from Oakland University that was filming in the area. The group had approached a member of the Park Patrol to ask questions about the Black Rocks area. The Patrol Officer told the group that jumping into the lake was dangerous and not a good idea because of the water temperature.
Police say the group ignored the advice of the Park Patrol Officer and jumped into the lake, at which the woman immediately came under distress and needed assistance. A floatation device was thrown to the woman. The group’s camera man, who was already in the water, and the Park Patrol Officer helped in getting her back to shore.
The woman was treated for the onset of hypothermia and sought her own medical treatment after the incident.
