MARQUETTE, MI – (Great Lakes Radio News) – 109th District State Representative John Kivela visited The SUNNY Morning Show with Walt & Mike today to give a legislative update.
The Marquette Democrat discussed a pair of bills he authored with Republican State Representative Ed McBroom of Vulcan expanding the state’s Next Michigan Development Act to authorize a sixth partnership zone in the U.P.
The legislation, which has a companion bill from Republican State Senator Tom Casperson, calls for the creation of the new zone because five zones previously authorized two years ago have all been activated downstate.
Kivela says the partnerships allow for agreements between two or more municipal governments to offer a combination of business and personal tax breaks, tax increment finance plans, and renaissance zones designed to stimulate local economies.
Representative Kivela also weighed in on the recently agreed-to state budget, road funding through use of surplus money and Democrat Mark Schauer, who recently entered the race for Governor.
