MARQUETTE, MI – (Great Lakes Radio News) – All three of Michigan’s juvenile justice facilities, including one in the Upper Peninsula, will remain open under a budget bill approved yesterday by the State House in Lansing.
Some of the facilities would have been closed under an earlier version of the House bill, but facilities in or near Escanaba, Grayling and Whitmore Lake will remain open under the final version of the budget bill of the fiscal year that starts October 1.
However, one of the facilities, W.J. Maxey Training School near Whitmore Lake would face a $300,000 decrease in funding, under the legislation.
The budget bill now goes to the State Senate for consideration.
