DNR: Less Wildfires This Year

    Great Lakes Radio News UpdateMARQUETTE, MI – (Great Lakes Radio News)The Department of Natural Resources says residents will not have as many wildfires to fear this summer due to the increased snowfall and flooding around the state.

    Last year was one of the worst fire seasons reported in a long time. So far this year, 115 fires have burned 401 acres, which is about half of what 2012 saw. By this time last year, 220 fires had already occurred.

    The Michigan 2012 wildfire season saw 495 wildfires with the most significant of these being the Duck Lake wildfire in Luce county. It was the third largest wildfire in Michigan history, burning 136 structures and 21,000 acres. At its peak, the fire was 11 miles long.
