Great Lakes Radio News UpdateMARQUETTE, MI – (Great Lakes Radio News)State Senator Tom Casperson says two steel mills are being talked about for the U.P. and one may be in Escanaba.

Casperson says the reason steel mills might be considered in the U.P. may have more to do with producing power than processing iron ore.

New technology makes it feasible to produce power as a by product of steel production. He says the heat used to produce the steel can be re-used to create steam that can be converted into energy. He says another possible byproduct of the iron mines is fertilizer.

Casperson says new technology could make it possible to produce fertilizer from the tailings of iron ore production.
