Great Lakes Radio NewsMARQUETTE, MI – (Great Lakes Radio News)A statewide hospital organization says Michigan hospitals provided just under $1.9 billion dollars in uncompensated care in 2011.

The report was issued by the Michigan Health and Hospital Association, which is also urging the Michigan legislature to invest in Medicaid and graduate medical education.

The report also comes just as the Legislature is considering Medicaid expansion, which would add more than 450,000 Michiganders to the Medicaid rolls.  That move would reduce the size of uncompensated costs that have been picked up by hospitals.

The report is titled “Michigan Hospitals: Building a Healthier Future.”  And while the report says Michigan Hospitals had to deal with almost $2 billion dollars in uncompensated care, the hospitals still continued to keep costs low, adding that they ranked 5.6 percent below the national average in fiscal year 2011.
