State of Michigan Not Outsourcing Services in Department of Corrections

Great Lakes Radio News UpdateMARQUETTE, MI – (Great Lakes Radio News)The State of Michigan will not be outsourcing food, health and mental health services in the Department of Corrections.

State officials say they have determined that bids from those vendors do not translate to adequate savings. Under civil service rules, the state must save at least five percent if the service is to be outsourced. As a result, the service will continue to be operated by the state, and up to 1,700 state employees who faced unemployment will remain on the job.

Corrections spokesperson Russ Marlan told reporters that the state is now notifying vendors of the decision.
