MARQUETTE, MI – (Great Lakes Radio News) – State Senator Tom Casperson called in today to The SUNNY Morning Show with Walt & Mike to discuss legislation he is sponsoring that amends the Natural Resources and Environmental Protection Act in Michigan.

Casperson is the lead sponsor on Senate Bill 1276, which calls for placing restrictions on the Department of Natural Resources and the Natural Resources Commission’s authority to set aside land to make sure biodiversity is preserved.

The Escanaba Republican says the agencies have too much power already to set aside land for several reasons and this plan would be too wide-reaching.

He also indicated this plan was previously going to be signed into law by the Granholm administration as an executive order, but they ran out of time before it was able to be done.

Casperson says he was against it then and remains against it now.  He says, however, that he is introducing the bill to open legislative discussion of the issues it covers and to hear from the public as well.
