MARQUETTE, MI – (Great Lakes Radio News)A rumored possible candidate for Governor of Michigan in two years has taken herself out of the running.

Senate Democratic Leader Gretchen Whitmer has announced that she will not run for governor in 2014. The East Lansing Democrat says while Governor Rick Snyder must be defeated, staying home and being around her 9 and 10 year old girls was more important.

Whitmer was considered one of the frontrunners for the Democratic nomination. Former U.S. Representative Mark Schauer of Battle Creek has said he’s considering a run.

Other potential candidates are U.S. Representative Gary Peters of Bloomfield Township and Lansing Mayor Virg Bernero who lost to Snyder in the 2010 election.
