MARQUETTE, MI – (Great Lakes Radio News) – Marquette County law enforcement agencies are among more than 100 police departments in 22 Michigan counties conducting extra drunk driving patrols to keep impaired drivers off the road as people ring in the new year tonight.
The Michigan Office of Highway Safety Planning says the extra officers are targeting impaired drivers through midnight tomorrow.
The OHSP is coordinating the effort which is supported by federal traffic safety funds. Fourteen people were killed in traffic crashes during the New Year’s holiday period last year in Michigan, five of those crashes involved alcohol.
