Sault Ste. Marie, MI – (Great Lakes Radio News) – A group of state legislators is urging the federal government to make upgrades to the Soo Locks.
Michigan senators, including Tom Casperson of Escanaba and Wayne Schmidt of Traverse City, say the locks are vital to the U.S economy and are in need of modernization.
They are also calling on federal approval of U.S. Army Corps of Engineers research into replacing a pair of locks that are too small to handle modern shipping vessels.
Legislators adopted a formal resolution during a joint hearing today at Lake Superior State University in Sault Ste. Marie.
Committee members also heard testimony from industry representatives, including the Lake Carriers’ Association.
The resolution now goes to the full Senate for consideration.
