Marquette, MI – (Great Lakes Radio News) – Marquette City Police are joining other law enforcement agencies around the U.P. warning residents of phone scams that are being reported around the region.

The callers claim to be from the IRS demanding immediate payment for a tax bill and may use threats of arrest or deportation if the bill is not paid.

Marquette Police say a similar scam, claiming to be from the Marquette Board of Light & Power, is also being reported in the city.

Authorities say the agencies never call citizens to request immediate payments or try to get credit card or bank account information over the phone.

They add that you should never give out personal or financial information over the phone unless you made the call and if you get such a call, simply hang up.
