Accidental shooting in MarquetteMARQUETTE, MI – (Great Lakes Radio News)Marquette City Police have arrested a Northern Michigan University student in connection with an early-morning shooting this week in Marquette.

21-year-old Nicholas Ireland of downstate Grosse Pointe was arrested for the shooting that happened Wednesday around 5:30 a.m. at 518 Fisher Street.

The shooting was determined to be accidental in nature.  Police say Ireland was handling a .45 caliber handgun in the living room when the gun went off.  A 21-year-old NMU student, Lauren Cockels of downstate West Bloomfield, was laying on a couch in the living room and was struck in the right knee by the bullet.

Several people at the house aided Cockels while Ireland called 9-1-1.  Police responding to the scene recovered the handgun and the discharged round.  They say alcohol was a factor in the case and Ireland was arrested on a two count misdemeanor warrant.

He is charged with Careless Discharge of a Firearm Causing Injury, which is a high court misdemeanor with up to 2 years behind bars or a $2000 fine.  He is also charged with Possession of a Firearm While Intoxicated, which is punishable by up to 93 days in jail.

Ireland will appear Monday in District Court on the charges.
