MARQUETTE, MI – (Great Lakes Radio News) – The winning continues for the Ishpeming Hematites. Word today that the Ishpeming High School has officially won Sports Illustrated’s Underdogs competition. The announcement of the win came this morning and as a result of the story of 19-year-old Eric Dompierre receiving the most online votes in the competition, Ishpeming‘s athletic department will receive a grant of $25,000.
Also, ten members of Eric’s team will attend the Sports Illustrated Sportsman of the Year Awards in New York City.
Dompierre, who has Down Syndrome, and his family challenged the Michigan High School Athletic Association and received a waiver allowing him to play sports his senior year at the age of 19.
Ten athletes and schools from around the country were profiled in the online contest.
