Reform tax dealing with miningMARQUETTE, MI – (Great Lakes Radio News)A state lawmaker who has only six weeks left in his term is pushing hard to reform tax law as it deals with mining in Michigan.

He is specifically interested in mining in the Upper Peninsula.  State House Republican Matt Huuki of Atlantic Mine has been pushing to change how nonferrous mining operations are taxed.

He told reporters in Lansing recently that the U.P. is in desperate need for a change in the tax law.  Specifically, his proposal would tax the operations only on the minerals actually extracted from the ground. Currently taxes are front loaded for mining operations.

Some critics worry that such a change could short change schools and local government on revenue.  Huuki lost his re-election bid earlier this month to Democrat challenger Scott Dianda.
