MARQUETTE, MI – (Great Lakes Radio News) – An Upper Peninsula bear farm will continue to be allowed to let paying customers pet cubs up to nine months old under a bill that passed the State Senate last week.
The measure comes on the heels of new Department of Agriculture rules that limited patron contact to cubs of only a few weeks of age.
The bill sponsor’s Republican Tom Casperson of Escanaba says this would have essentially ended a major attraction of 15 years at the Ozwald Bear Farm in Newberry.
The legislation puts the state rules in line with federal standards and will continue what has become a popular attraction that brings tourism dollars to the eastern U.P.
