Negaunee, MI – January 11, 2022 – The Negaunee Miners Girls Basketball team took down the West Iron County Wykons at home 67-38. Carl Leander Johnson had the call live on Sunny 101.9 and the online live stream.
1st Quarter: The Miners came out of the gates with no hesitation to score as Lily Nelson drained the three right away for Negaunee and they took the quick 3-0 lead. The first quarter flew by and West Iron County made it an interesting game as Haiden Gill had a strong first quarter and only trailed Negaunee 9-13. Gill hit a three to cut the deficit down to one. It was a strong quarter for both teams as Alyssa Hill of the Miners had 8 points and Gill had 6 points for the Wykons.
End of 1st Quarter: Negaunee 13, West Iron County 12
2nd Quarter: The Wykons came into the second quarter on a mission as they got an and-one right away taking the lead. The Miners fired right back when Lily Nelson hit a long three, giving Negaunee the lead right back. Nelson dished a nice pass to Emily Gauthier and she got the bucket, extending the lead to 3. There was a slight scoring drought but that quickly ended when Cooper Atkins hit a three. Hill extended the lead to eight when he got a nice bucket. The Miners continued their strong second quarter when Ella Mason got the loose ball and got the fast break layup. Danica Shamion would get fouled and go to the line, she would hit both free throws and cut the Miners lead to 8. The lead didn’t remain at 8 for long when Madison Smith got a nice pass from Hill and she got the bucket.
End of 2nd Quarter: Negaunee 29, West Iron County 20
3rd Quarter: Hill continued her strong performance when she got her 12th point of the night. The lead was extended to 11 when Lily Nelson got a nice bucket for Negaunee. Mason stole the ball from the Wykons and she hit the jumpshot on the other side of the court, the Miners led 35-22. The Miners began to break the game wide open when Nelson hit a wide open three. Negaunee continued to pressure the Wykons which resulted in a turnover and the Miners took the ball for a nice layup. Negaunee got the lead up to 44-29 when Nelson hit her second three of the quarter. Eliana Juchemich got fouled on her shot and hit both free throws, her first points of the night.
End of 3rd Quarter: Negaunee 49, West Iron County 26
4th Quarter: Juchemich got a huge block, swatting the ball back all the way to the perimeter. The lead got up to 53-28 when Josie Thomson got her first points of the night. Daylyn Drew got her first points of the night when she hit a shot from beyond the arc for the Miners. The Wykons cut the lead and they hit two free throws. Cooper Atkins kept up the Miners offense when she got a shot to go through the hoop. Drew got another three to go down, her second of the quarter. Atkins went up for a shot, she got fouled and hit the shot. She would miss the free throw but Juchemich got the board and put the shot back up for two. To end the night for the Miners, Tessa Standerford got the two point bucket to go.
Final Score: Negaunee 67, West Iron County 38
