Negaunee, MI – December 17th, 2021 – The Negaunee Miners girls basketball team lost in a nail biter to the Hancock Bulldogs 43-51 on Friday night. Travis Nelson had the call live from Hancock on Sunny 101.9.
1st Quarter: The Miners came out of the gates hot defensively as Alyssa Hill got a block right away. The Miners fell behind 0-2 but Ella Mason quickly changed that as she got the first points of the game for the Miners. Hill got another block but the Miners quickly fell behind 2-6. Isabella Herbert nearly extended Hancock’s lead with an and one but she was called for the travel. Hill got two straight buckets for the Miners and the game was tied up 6-6. Summer Dudo drained a three to give the Miners their first lead of the night.
End of 1st: Negaunee 9, Hancock 6
2nd Quarter: It was a slow start to the second quarter as the Miners found themselves down 9-10 not too far in. The Miners got their first points of the quarter when Emily Gauthier hit a wide open two. Lily Nelson helped in a big way when she drained a three ball. Hancock was on fire in the second and the Miners were down 13-23 in the blink of an eye. Lana Aho hit a three for the Bulldogs putting the Miners in a 13 point deficit going into the second half of basketball.
End of 2nd: Negaunee 13, Hancock 26
3rd Quarter: The Miners needed points to get back in the game and Summer Dudo provided them points when she hit a three. Negaunee cut the deficit to 18-28 and were finding their way back into the game. It was quite the sequence for the Miners when Dudo stole the ball and then eventually drained a three, giving the Miners a much needed spark. Madison Smith hit a big shot to continue the Miners hopes of walking away with a win. Ella Mason drew the charge and then hit the three, the Miners trailed by 8.
End of 3rd: Negaunee 27, Hancock 38
Fourth Quarter: It was a chaotic fourth quarter as the Miners did find their way back into the game. Gauthier hit the two point shot to bring the Miners within ten points of the Bulldogs. Time went by and Ella Mason hit a shot from beyond the arc and all of a sudden it was a six point game. With 58 seconds to go Hill went to the line. She made the first but missed the second. Kaisa Salani traveled, giving the ball back to the Miners. The Miners took advantage of this opportunity when Ella Mason hit a three, cutting the lead to 7. Free throws from the Bulldogs put the game out of reach, Ella Mason put a three up with time expiring but missed.
Final Score: Negaunee 43, Hancock 51
Next Game: The Negaunee Miners girls basketball team plays again on December 20th as they’ll host the visiting Calumet Copper kings with tip off starting at 7:15 p.m on Sunny 101.9.
