Miners Surge Late, Defeat Redettes 53-40

Negaunee, MIDecember 14th, 2021 – The Negaunee Miners hosted the Marquette Redettes in girls basketball tonight.

1Q: The game opened up with back to back turnovers by both teams, but it was the Miners who scored first, thanks to Forward Emily Gauthier. The Redettes were able to tie the ball game after free throws from MacPhee. The next several possessions were littered with turnovers, but the Miners started to hit from beyond the arc. It was Ella Mason and Lilly Nelson knocking down back to back three pointers, the Miners led 8-3 with just under 3 minutes to play in the quarter. The Redettes were able to cut the deficit to 2 from a three pointer from Macphee, but Ella Mason buried another to give Negaunee the 5 point lead once again. The Redettes scored a bucket with just under 30 seconds to play, it was the Miners with the 13-10 lead heading into the 2nd quarter.

2Q: The turnover problems for both teams carried from the 1st quarter, as foul trouble started to become an issue as well. After no score for the first 4 minutes of the quarter, both squads were able to score a bucket, as Negaunee also added a free throw. Marquette Guard Zoe Smith drained a couple wide open three point shots, as Marquette took the lead for the first time in the game. Marquette’s lead didn’t last long as Lilly Mason was able to beat the buzzer before the half to once again tie the ball game, it was 23 all.

3Q: The Miners started the 2nd half with a three pointer from Ella Mason, and a two point bucket from Center Alyssa Hill. Meghan MacPhee answered quickly with a basket of her own, but Miner Ella Mason knocked down another deep ball, her 4th of the night.The remainder of the quarter was the Alyssa Hill block show, blocking 4 shots, totally 7 to end the quarter. And after 12 3rd quarter points from Ella Mason, the Miners led 37-34 heading into the the 4th quarter.

4Q: The Miners continued to find opening quarter success, Alyssa Hill capitalized on
the old fashion three point play, on the next defensive possession, she blocked her 8th shot of the night. Marquette Guard Maria Millado tried her best to get her team back into the ball game, but the Miners started to fire on all cylinders midway through the quarter. Alyssa Hill and Ella Mason continued to dominate as the Miners led by 10 points with just under 4 minutes to play. Marquette couldn’t find their offensive rhythm late in the quarter, as Negaunee cruised to their 4th win of the year. The Miners were led by Ella Mason’s 19 points, and Alyssa Hill’s 9 blocks.

The Miners will continue their season on Friday, when they travel to Hancock to take on the Bulldogs. The ball will tip at 7:15 pm, listen to the broadcast on Sunny 101.9.
