Washington, D.C. – (Great Lakes Radio News) – U.S. Congressman Dan Benishek has announced that he will not be seeking re-election at the end of his current term.
Benishek released a statement today saying he was not running so he could devote more time to his family and focus on helping veterans, families and workers throughout Northern Michigan.
The Iron Mountain Republican said in March that he was planning to run for a fourth 2-year term in 2016.
Benishek’s decision leaves the 1st Congressional District seat, which covers the entire U.P. and a large portion of Northern Lower Michigan, up for grabs going into the 2016 election season.
