Great Lakes Radio Marquette - Upper Peninsula NewsOpening arguments got underway yesterday in the trial for a 45-year old Upper Peninsula man accused of killing a woman who was scheduled to testify at his criminal trial last year.  David Levack of Kingsford is charged with open murder, felony murder, first degree home invasion, and witness intimidation in Iron County trial court.  If convicted, Levack faces a maximum penalty of life in prison.  Sheriff’s deputies found the body of 81-year old Joyce Johnson when they went to her Stambaugh township home after she failed to appear in court on September 27, 2011 as a key witness in a case in which Levack faces theft charges.

Starting this Sunday, Detective 1st Lieutenant John Halpin is the new man in charge of the Michigan State Police 8th District.  Haplin, a veteran of the State Police of over 20 years, is being promoted to Captain and will command all state police operations in the Upper Peninsula.  He takes over for Captain Myles McCormack who retired.

Marquette native and graduate of Northern Michigan University Cheryl Hill announced her candidacy for the Marquette County Probate Court Judge.  Hill graduated from Marquette University Law School in 1987 and has worked for he Marquette County Prosecutor’s Office for the past 12 years.  She was the Chief Civil Counsel for the County of Marquette prior to assuming her present role as Chief Assistant Prosecutor.
