Marquette, MI – (06/25/20) – A new book on the life of a man with a prominent history tied to Marquette has been written by James McCommons. The book, “Camera Hunter: George Shiras III and the Birth of Wildlife Photography” recounts Shiras’s life and craft.
McCommons, a professor of journalism at Northern Michigan University, joined Mark & Walt in the Morning this week for a chat about the book and why he decided to write it.
He discussed how Shiras traveled to wild country in the Marquette area and around the region, refined his trail camera techniques, and advocated for the protection of wildlife.
McCommons said the biography records Shiras’s accomplishments as a visual artist, but also delves into his history as a wildlife conservationist, adventurer, and legislator.
