Marquette, MI – (05/19/20) – Governor Gretchen Whitmer joined Mark & Walt in the Morning today to talk about her executive order lifting restrictions that will allow restaurants, bars and retails stores in the U.P. to open this week.

The executive order also covers 17 northern Lower Michigan counties, including the Traverse City area, and allows the businesses to open at 12:01 a.m. Friday.

Whitmer said the order came after her team determined tracking data showed a low enough number of COVID-19 cases in the Upper Peninsula and the Lower Michigan region to lift restrictions for certain businesses, adding that those businesses that re-open must adopt strict safety measures.

She explained that restaurants and bars must limit capacity to 50-percent of normal seating, keep groups at least six feet from one another, require their servers to wear face coverings, and follow disinfection protocols.

Whitmer’s order also lifts restrictions on social gatherings of 10 people or less in those regions, and office work can resume if it cannot be done remotely.
