Marquette, MI – (Great Lakes Radio News) – The City of Marquette will be hopping this weekend with activity and Marquette Police are encouraging all to stay safe.

MPD Captain Mike Laurila joined the SUNNY Morning Show with Walt & Mike today to share some thoughts on everyone making it through the weekend.

Laurila said good weather, the St. Patrick’s Day holiday and the WCHA Hockey Championship game featuring Northern Michigan University and Michigan Tech at the Berry Events Center on Saturday will make Marquette an active place to be.

He said that people need to use common sense and not drink and drive if they go out and celebrate this weekend and to be sure to use a designated driver or a cab to get home safely.

Laurila added that Marquette Police will have extra officers on patrol on the streets, including an officer that will be specifically looking for drunk drivers who is funded by a special enforcement grant from the Michigan Office of Highway Safety Planning.

He also reminded motorists to pay attention on the roads and keep an eye out for pedestrians who will be out and about.
