American Cancer Society kicking of annual campaign

MARQUETTE, MI – (Great Lakes Radio News) – Starting today, the American Cancer Society is kicking off an annual campaign encouraging women to get tested, and treated, for breast cancer.

The effort comes during Breast Cancer Awareness Month throughout October, in an attempt to save more lives from the second-leading cancer-causing disease among women.

Vicki Rakowski, the Chief Mission Officer at the ACS Great Lakes Division, says some progress is being made with a two percent decline in the mortality rate from breast cancer in Michigan, but there is still a long way to go. She says the survivorship of a woman with breast cancer detected and treated early is now 99 percent, or an extended life span of five years and beyond.

Rakowski recommends women obtain their 2012 Michigan mammography guide for more answers.   That guide is available at www.cancer.org/michiganmammogram.
