EPA will make a decision on County Road 5-95 after last nights public meeting

MARQUETTE, MI – (Great Lakes Radio News) – The Environmental Protection Agency held a public meeting last night in Marquette on the proposed construction of a new road in Western Marquette County.

Several hundred people attended the session at Northern Michigan University on the proposal by the Marquette County Road Commission to build County Road 5-95.

The project would build a 21.4 mile primary county road, running north-south between U.S. 41 and County Road Triple A.  The new road would run through Champion, Ely, Humboldt, and Michigamme townships.

The agency has reviewed the proposal and has raised questions as to whether there are any practical, alternative routes that would have less impact on wetlands and other aquatic resources.  People on both sides of the issue voiced their opinions on the matter to officials from the EPA who will now tabulate the comments and make a final ruling on the proposal.

The EPA will continue to take comments on the issue through September 4th.  Written comments can be sent to the EPA office in Chicago, IL and via e-mail at rd.county@epa.gov .
