Update on the sexual assault in Gulliver Michigan

MARQUETTE, MI – (Great Lakes Radio News) – A downstate Battle Creek native who was rowing around the shore of Lake Michigan for charity has been sexually assaulted near Manistique.

It happened early Sunday morning south of Gulliver.  Jennifer Gibbons would row by day and then pull her row boat up on shore or into a port and sleep in it at night. Her goal was to travel 1500 miles and raise $150,000 for breast cancer survivors.

The suspect is described as a white male in his 30’s, and about 5′ 8″ to six feet tall. He has light eyes, short hair and an athletic build and was reported to be wearing a grayish green t-shirt, jean shorts and tennis shoes.  Police are also looking for information about a yellow Jeep Wrangler that was seen in the area.  The Jeep reportedly had a spare tire with a smiley face cover on the back. Anyone with any information related to the case is asked to call their nearest Michigan State Police post.

Gibbons, a 2003 graduate of Lakeview High School in Battle Creek, said in a post on her website that she will resume her trip next week with additional security and precautions. Her organization, R.O.W. “Recovery on Water” assists breast cancer patients in their recovery. She had raised about $80,000.
