Sunny.FM stole the show at the MAB Broadcast Excellence Awards on March 11, 2015

Each year broadcasters throughout Michigan submit their work to the Michigan Association of Broadcaster (MAB) Broadcast Excellence Awards program. Broadcasters compete against a standard of excellence established by MAB that showcases “the best of the best” in Michigan broadcasting.

101.9 SunnyFM won 10 awards from the Michigan Association of Broadcasters!

The prestigious Station of the Year award is based on the total cumulative points for ALL awards won by a station, with additional points added for weighted category wins.

Sunny.FM took home six Best in Category Awards and three Merit awards as well as the Station of the Year award for our market.

Best in Category – Breaking News Story: Yooper Added to the Dictionary
Listen to the Winning Entry! The Breaking News Category features a single report or series of reports on a breaking or “unplanned” news event (including storm coverage) under media deadline. Criteria for this award is the manner in which the news organization responded, presentation of facts, delivery, follow-ups and news elements uncovered.
Best In Category – Feature Programming: U.P. Propane Shortage in Polar Vortex
Listen to the Winning Entry! The Feature Programming Category features a series of reports on a single topic which may be a public affairs program featuring issues of interest to Michigan citizens of all ages (may be children’s programming, recreation, sports, special performances, parades, concerts, etc.) at local and state levels. Criteria judging this award is based on production, relevancy and creativity.
Best in Category – Best Feature/Use of Medium: Christmas Tree Lighting – Catch the Christmas Spirit!
Listen to the Winning Entry! The Best Feature/Use of Medium Category showcases a single report which may have aired in a newscast as relief or contrast to serious reporting or a long form program. Criteria for judging this award is human interest, subject portrayal, creative writing, entertainment value, effective use of the audio medium, control of the medium, natural sound and editing.
Best in Category – Investigative Story: VA Medical Center Interview after Iron Mountain Audit
Listen to the Winning Entry! This award is for coverage of a significant event affecting the community. It may be an investigative or enterprise story. Criteria for judging this award is significance, presentation of facts, thoroughness and delivery.
Best in Category – Best Morning Show Broadcast Team: The Sunny Morning Show with Walt and Mike
Listen to the Winning Entry! The award for Morning Show Broadcast Personality or Team is the best locally originated newscast. Each submission is limited to five minutes. Criteria for judging is based on production, effectiveness and creativity.
Best in Category – Best Newscast: Election Night News Update
Listen to the Winning Entry! The Newscast category judges the best locally originated newscast. Criteria for judging this award are presentation, production values, interest of stories presented and overall impact of the newscast.
Merit – Play by Play Sports: Negaunee Miners
Listen to the Winning Entry! Play-by-Play Sports awards the best locally originated play-by-play live sports coverage. Criteria for judging are presentation and production values.
Merit – Weekend Broadcast Personality: In The Right Mind with Dan Adamini
Listen to the Winning Entry! The Weekend Broadcast Personality category is for the best regularly scheduled on-air weekend broadcast personality or broadcast team. Maximum length of the submission is five minutes. Criteria for judging is based on production, effectiveness and creativity.
Merit – Community Involvement

This video submission showcases our community involvement commitment.

Owner and General Manager of Great Lakes Radio, Inc., Todd Noordyk accepted the award in Lansing and said the award showcased the talents and teamwork of staff in many departments throughout the close-knit, family-owned and operated station.

“I am very happy to win Station of the Year”, Noordyk said, “but I am also truly pleased we were recognized in so many different categories.”

Noordyk also mentioned the award he is most proud of is the Community Involvement award. Great Lakes Radio is a locally-owned and operated group of stations with staff that lives right here in Marquette County.
