Marquette, MI – October 12, 2026 – Wildfires burning in Marquette and Baraga Counties have led to a few evacuations and a warning for others to be ready to leave their homes.  State DNR fire officials say the Ridge Fire, about ten miles northwest of Marquette, between County Road 510 and North Basin Drive, has burned about 256 acres.

The Craig Lake Fire north of Craig Lake State Park in Baraga County is also continuing to grow this morning and at last report, had consumed 309 acres.

Kerry Heckman, Public Information Officer with the Michigan DNR Incident Management Team, spoke about the fires with Mark & Walt in the Morning.

Heckman said both fires are in rugged areas and difficult to get to on the ground. Aircraft are being used to drop water on the fires, and fire crews are on the ground in both locations working to contain them.

She explained that the DNR has put in place a “Ready, Set, Go!” protocol for residents along North Basin Drive, meaning they should be ready to evacuate their homes at a moment’s notice.

Heckman said affected residents are encouraged to monitor local media and emergency alerts, load their vehicles with emergency bags and valuables and be ready to leave as conditions can change quickly.

She also said the Marquette County Sheriff’s Office has established an evacuation center at Negaunee Township Hall on M-35. The Red Cross will be assisting evacuees and their pets at this location if needed.
