Marquette, MIFebruary 18, 2026 – The NMU Refugee Outreach Collective is hosting an Art and Jazz Charity Gala this Thursday evening, February 19th, from 7:00pm to 9:00pm at Northern Michigan University.

The evening will be at the Northern Center with live jazz music and visual art for purchase to support the RFOC’s refugee education initiatives.

Carter Hairston, President of the local RFOC chapter at NMU, spoke about the event with Mark & Walt in the Morning.

Hairston explained the Collective was founded last year to educate the campus and community about refugees and support of their goals.

He said the group raises funds for the group’s Global Classroom program to assist refugees in enrolling in U.S. college courses at no cost.

Hairston said the money rasied at the gala will help students at Dzaleka Refugee Camp in Malawi by securing Starlink internet access for the site, which will allow students to attend college classes online.
