Marquette, MIJanuary 23, 2026 – Very cold weather has moved into the region overnight and will continue into the weekend.

The National Weather Service has issued an Extreme Cold Warning with dangerously cold wind chills for most of Upper Michigan through 10:00am tomorrow. Overnight lows have been in the double-digits below zero, and wind chills as low as 40 below are expected.

A Winter Storm Warning is also in effect until 7:00 o’clock tonight for Northern Houghton and Keweenaw Counties.

Experts say with such extreme temperatures and conditions, be sure to protect yourself against frostbite, which can start in as little as 10 minutes on unprotected skin.

The dangerously cold conditions have resulted in schools and offices being closed across the region today. That includes Northern Michigan University, Michigan Tech, Keweenaw Bay Ojibwa Community College in L’Anse, and all locations for Bay and Gogebic Community Colleges.

Many community agencies and services are closed today.

In Marquette County:

The Ishpeming, Negaunee and Marquette Senior Centers are closed.

Community Action Alger-Marquette has canceled their services for the day.

It’s recommended that if you do have an early-morning appointment today to call ahead to see if it is still on as scheduled.
