Marquette, MI – November 10, 2025 – Today marks the 50th anniversary of the loss of the freighter Edmund Fitzgerald in a massive storm on Lake Superior.
The story of the sinking, and the loss of the 29 crew members, has endured for five decades and has evolved into Great Lakes lore.
Marquette-based Maritime Historian and Author Fred Stonehouse recently sat down with mediaBrew Communications News Director Walt Lindala to talk about the final voyage of the Fitzgerald and why that story continues to live on.
Stonehouse shared his memories of the night of the storm on the shores of Lake superior in Marquette, how he came to write the book, The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald, and why he thinks it’s not really possible to fully explain what happened to the vessel that night when it sank in the storm.
