Marquette, MIJanuary 31, 2025 – The book selected for this year’s Diversity Common Reader Program at Northern Michigan University has been announced along with several related events.

This year’s book is As We Have Always Done: Indigenous Freedom Through Radical Resistance by Leanne Betasamosake Simpson.

Dr. April Lindala, Professor of Native American Studies at NMU, and Caroline LaPorte, academic Department Head of the Center for Native American Studies at NMU, spoke about the book and the events with Mark & Walt in the Morning.

Lindala explained that the DCRP has been held annually since 2013, and revolves around a nonfiction book of interdisciplinary interest that advances discussions of diversity, inclusion and social justice. She added that the book is a critical and timely vehicle to start conversations to blend disciplines and build solidarity across communities.

LaPorte said that the book is one of her personal favorites and presents a good opportunity to have the broader community learn more about Anishinaabe thought as the political and intellectual force that it has always been.

Lindala and LaPorte said several events are planned, including a visit by the author to the NMU campus in March.  Find out more about the Diversity Common Reader Program HERE.
