Marquette, MIOctober 29, 2024The Negaunee Public Schools closed down for a day last week after Superintendent Dan Skewis was contacted early in the morning by the FBI and Negaunee Police about a threat.

Authorities said a 15-year old in Negaunee had posted a message on Snapchat saying there was going to be a violent act at school that day.

Skewis spoke about the incident today with News Director Walt Lindala on Mark & Walt in the Morning.

Skewis said that the incident was the first of it’s kind that the district has had to weather, and he shared some of the timeline of events and what went into the decision to close down that day.

He said the classes were canceled as a precautionary measure, but police contacted him about a half hour later saying although the child lives in Negaunee, they attend school in a neighboring district, and the threat was not aimed at any Negaunee school buildings.

Skewis said the suspect was identified and apprehended and the threat was found to be a hoax.
