
Marquette, MI – Wednesday, April 3, 2024 – Stormy conditions have hit a major portion of the U.P. the with high winds and heavy, wet snow.
The inclement weather has closed all schools in Marquette and Alger Counties for today, including Northern Michigan University. The closings also include Christ the King Preschool in Ishpeming and Redeemer Lutheran Preschool in Marquette.
The poor conditions will continue through the morning and into the afternoon.
A Blizzard Warning remains in effect for Marquette and Baraga Counties until 8:00 o’clock tonight.
Blizzard conditions will continue with additional snow accumulations of 5 to 24 inches, greatest over the higher terrain from the Huron Mountains to Negaunee with the least amounts near the Lake Superior shore. Winds gusting as high as 45 mph, strongest winds expected through the day today, especially near Lake Superior.
State Police say travel is very difficult this morning as roads are covered in a heavy, wet and slushy snow, combined with widespread blowing snow that is reducing visibility. They remind drivers that if you must travel, please use caution.
The wet and heavy snow along with high winds may also cause tree limbs to break and damage power lines, causing widespread power outages.
