Marquette, MIFebruary 28, 2024High winds and snowfall are creating very blustery conditions in Marquette and Alger Counties this morning. Winds gusting out of the north at 30 to 35 mph along with the snowfall have made for very hazardous driving conditions with drifting snow and poor visibility. Single digit temperatures are also combining with the wind to create wind chills in the double digits below zero.

As a result of the poor weather conditions, all schools in Marquette, Alger, Baraga, Houghton and Keweenaw Counties are closed for today. That includes Northern Michigan University, which has canceled classes for the day and offices and facilities are closed. Also closed today is the Keweenaw Bay Ojibwa Community College in L’Anse.

The National Weather Service says a Winter Weather Advisory is in effect across the central U.P. this morning that calls for continued snowfall of over 5 inches in some areas. Winds out of the north may, at times, gust up to 45 mph creating whiteout conditions, especially along the Lake Superior shoreline. Slow down and use caution if you must travel.
