Marquette, MI – January 12, 2024 – Upper Peninsula County Poet Laureate and Upper Peninsula County Youth Poet Laureate positions have been named in several counties in the U.P.
Ron Riekki, coordinator, spoke about the effort today on Mark & Walt in the Morning.
Riekki explained the program is intended to recognize writers in counties across the U.P. with the hope that U.P. County Poet Laureates will lead community events to encourage poetry in their region.
Recipients of three-year term U.P. County Poet Laureate and U.P. County Youth Poet Laureate positions include:
Alger County – Demitrius Davis
Chippewa County – Tyler Dettloff
Delta County – Asher Meunier-Irving
Youth Poet Laureate of Iron County – Christopher Johnson
Keweenaw County – Barbara Simila
Luce County – Peter Wurdock
Youth Poet Laureate of Luce County – Sailor Raymond
Mackinac County – Jamie Andress
Marquette County – Josh Brindle
Ontonagon County – Marlene Broemer
Riekki said commemorative events will be taking place starting in April for public readings. He added that the hope is to have every U.P. county participating in the effort by the end of the year.
