Marquette, MI – November 30, 2023 – The Michigan Iron Industry Museum has some very unique local mining and railroad history being featured tomorrow with the return of The Yankee steam locomotive to the museum after three years of restoration.
James said an open house is happening at the Museum tomorrow, Friday, December 1st, from 5:00pm to 8:00pm. The event is open to the public and admission is free.
He explained that The Yankee is one of the oldest surviving steam locomotives in the United States and was used at the Jackson mine in Negaunee from 1868 to 1895.
James added that The Yankee is one of three of the models that still exist in the world. The historical significance of The Yankee is that it, along with it’s twin, the John Bull, signaled the first major technological change for the Upper Peninsula iron mines, which was the coming of steam powered equipment.
