Marquette, MI July 14, 2023 – In the latest state budget signed by Governor Gretchen Whitmer, a multi-million dollar line item allocation was of special interest to the City of Negaunee.

The budget for next fiscal year contains $3 million for the continued effort to restore the historic Vista Theatre building in downtown Negaunee, which sustained a catastrophic roof collapse in August of 2020.

Since then, funding efforts have struggled to effectively raise an estimated $3 to $5 million needed to make repairs to get the building back into working order.

Negaunee City Manager Nate Heffron spoke about what the recently-announced funding will mean to those efforts during a press conference today with state lawmakers in Marquette.

Heffron says the influx in state dollars will allow the City of Negaunee to take a bigger role in the work to save the building and develop a mix of uses for it into the future.

There has been no timeline announced yet for work to begin on the building.
