Marquette, MI – May 15, 2023 – Republican State Senator Ed McBroom is calling the Senate’s Fiscal Year 2024 budget proposal, advanced by majority Democrats, “troubling”.
McBroom shared his thoughts with Mark & Walt in the Morning today.
McBroom says while there are some good things in the $79.6 billion budget proposal, he finds the plan troubling because it takes a $9.5 billion surplus and spends it all in the first year.
He says the proposed budget does contain substantial spending for education and repair of roads and infrastructure, but is too focused on urban locations in southeast Michigan and ignores the U.P. and other rural locations around the state.
McBroom said the Senate, House and Governor Whitmer’s proposals will now have their differences worked out in committee with the goal of getting a final plan together by the end of this month that will then go before final votes and onto the Governor’s desk for her signature.
McBroom also discussed legislation moving forward at the Capitol that is addressing pension and retirement funding issues for the state’s corrections officers. He shared some frustrations with how the legislation is advancing, but is grateful the matter is being discussed.
