Special Evening In Marquette Celebrates Midsummer And Finnish Culture

Celebrate Midsummer at Marquette’s Mattson Lower Harbor Park

Marquette, MIJune 23, 2022 – A special celebration of the 25th Anniversary of the City of Marquette’s sister city friendship with Kajaani, Finland, and the Marquette Symphony Orchestra’s 25th Anniversary is happening this Friday in conjunction with the City’s Art Week.

Tristan Luoma, Board Member with the Marquette Area Sister Cities Partnership and the Marquette Symphony Orchestra, spoke about the event today with Mark & Walt in the Morning.

Luoma said the “Friendship Across Waters – Art Week Finnish Midsummer Celebration” coincides with the Finnish midsummer holiday of Juhannus and features a free concert and program at Mattson Lower Harbor Park.

He said the event begins at at 7:00 p.m. with a performance by the Finnish Folk Trio of Maija Niemi, Marianne Saarivirta-Kolpack, and Seija Alisimi-Kenn.

The Marquette Area Sister City Partnership will then follow with a program about the history of the City of Marquette’s Sister City Partnership with the city of Kajaani, Finland.

Luoma added the evening closes with the Marquette Symphony Orchestra Summer Strings with music that celebrates the rich Finnish heritage of the U.P. and Marquette’s Sister City friendship with Kajaani, Finland.
