Marquette, MINovember 2, 2021 – Tobacco use is the leading cause of preventable disease, disability and death in the United States. Each year nearly 500,000 Americans die prematurely due to smoking or exposure to second hand smoke.

Fred Stover, Clinical Coordinator with Upper Peninsula Health Plan, spoke about tobacco cessation and more today with Mark & Walt in the Morning.

Stover explained the health benefits of stopping smoking and tobacco use and shared information about the American Cancer Society hosting the Great American Smoke Out in November to encourage smokers to quit.

He added that the message is that you don’t have to quit in one day, you just have to start with one. November 18th is that day this year.

Stover also talked about chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, or COPD for short, which is a serious lung disease that makes it hard to breathe over time.

He wrapped up with recommending some resources to someone who is ready to quit smoking or other types of tobacco, including the Michigan Tobacco Quitline which is free for anyone to use by calling 1-800-QUIT-NOW.
