Marquette, MI – October 20, 2021 – U.S. Senator Gary Peters is praising the location selection of the U.S. Coast Guard National Center of Expertise, or NCOE, for the Great Lakes in the eastern U.P.
Peters spoke about the project and how it all came to be today with Mark & Walt in the Morning.
Peters explained that the Center will be headquartered at Lake Superior State University in Sault Ste. Marie and will serve as the hub of the Center and home to its supervisor, the Great Lakes Environmental Research Laboratory in Ann Arbor, and the Coast Guard.
Peters successfully secured $4.5 million for the initiative and passed legislation establishing the NCOE in 2018.
It will research the impacts of oil spills in freshwater and develop effective responses if an oil spill were to happen in the Great Lakes or elsewhere.
