Jalina McClain 8th Day Interview About SAYT Disney’s Newsies – The Musical

Marquette, MichiganDecember 15th – Jalina McClain, Executive Director of the Superior Arts Youth Theater (SAYT), discussed their mission as well as the casting call for their presentation of Disney’s Newsies: The Broadway Musical.  The theater’s mission is “to empower young people through performance arts, education and the creation of outstanding theatrical and musical art.”

This newest production to be presented in March, 2019, features about 50 kids (fewer than usual) news singers and dancers to bring the story of kids working to sell newspapers at the turn of the beginning of the 20th century.  The theater is looking for hard working kids from 7-18 years old.  All of SAYT productions must be no older than seniors in high school.

The Auditions from December 17th – 20th, requires pre-registration.  Sign up ahead of call.  Monday is dance call, with vocal and acting call Tuesday and Wednesday.  Here are some of the rules for the audition.

Kids that want to part of the cast need to show they are “willing to put in the work.”

Monday, Dec. 17

  • A section of choreography will be taught at the Dance Call in preparation for the Dance Audition on Thursday, December 20 from 6pm-7:30pm.

*To be considered for a Principal, Supporting, or Ensemble Role actors must present an Individual Vocal & Acting Audition AND attend the Dance Audition 6:00-7:30pm on Thursday, December 20, 2018.

Actors who would like to be considered for a Featured or Cameo Role (non-singing, non-dancing) ONLY are not required to attend the Dance Audition.

Please prepare the following combination to be considered for:

Attend a Dance Call.

Present a monologue and song cutting no longer than 90 seconds combined.

Attend the Dance Audition.

Attend a Dance Call.

Present a 60 second song cutting.

Attend the Dance Audition.

You do NOT need to attend Dance Call or Dance Audition.

Present one or two monologues no longer than 90 seconds combined.
