Negaunee, Michigan – Negaunee Proposal 2 Info Session comes to Negaunee Public Library this week.  Questions and points discussed by Elizabeth Benyi on the 8th day Radio Show that aired October 13th:

  • Should the electorate choose their elected representatives or should politicians choose their voters?
  • What is the future of democracy if special interests continue to fund redistricting for politicians to skew the voting districts?

SOURCE: Informational Materials distributed by Voters Not Politicians.

WHO: Voters Not Politicians, a non-partisan ballot committee to end gerrymandering, the manipulation of voting maps for political gain.

WHAT: Discussions on the problems caused by gerrymandering and a proposed solution for Michigan voters to appear on the November 6 ballot.

WHEN: Monday, October 15, 2018 at 5:30–7:00pm

WHERE: Negaunee Public Library | 319 W Case St, Negaunee, Michigan 49866

WHY: To inform voters about Proposal 2, an amendment to the Michigan State Constitution to reform the process for redrawing congressional and state legislative district boundaries through an Independent Citizens Redistricting Commission.

DETAILS: Currently, politicians and lobbyists draw our voting maps behind closed doors. Voters Not Politicians is working to amend the state Constitution to establish an Independent Citizens Redistricting Commission that would empower voters to draw district lines through a series of open meetings. Proposal 2 has been certified for the November ballot in order to safeguard the rights of all citizens to have a voice and input in their democracy.

Using all volunteer petition circulators, the organization collected more than 425,000 signatures in 110 days to place the proposal on the November 2018 state ballot, well in excess of the 315,654 minimum required by law. Ending partisan gerrymandering is an important first step in solving our state’s most important issues, like education, roads and safe water.

Listen To 8th Day Interview with Elizabeth Benyi:

There will be another opportunity October 26th to learn more in Marquette at the Marquette redistricting reform town hall. This presentation is being offered to inform voters about Proposal 2, a proposed amendment to the Michigan State Constitution. Proposal 2 aims to reform the process for redrawing congressional and state legislative district boundaries.

This redrawing occurs every 10 years following our national census. Currently, politicians and lobbyists draw our voting maps behind closed doors and without voter input. The current system (also called “gerrymandering”) gives political parties the unnatural power to choose which voters and communities they want to represent. Voters Not Politicians is working to amend the state Constitution to establish an Independent Citizens Redistricting Commission that would empower trained Michigan voters to draw the district lines through a series of open meetings. This presentation will be given by a local spokesman and there will be time to have any audience questions and concerns answered. Proposal 2 will be on the November 6th ballot.

This final town hall will be given on Thursday, October 25, 2018 at 6:30pm. Location is in the Peter White Public Library (Shiras Room), 217 N. Front St., Marquette, MI
