Marquette, Michigan – Michigan’s Upper Peninsula is known for its stunning beauty and natural wonders, four seasons (one of which brings tons of snow), and quirky personality traits that come with living in a vast, sparsely populated land surrounded on three sides by the Great Lakes Huron, Michigan and Superior. Kath Usitalo’s book 100 Things to Do in the Upper Peninsula Before You Die is both an introduction to the UP and a handy resource for veteran visitors and Yoopers (resident UP-ers) who find plenty to discover and share with family and friends. Kath carefully curated a winter itinerary, which can be found in the back of the book.

Some activities to consider can be found below:

  • The Northern Lights are spectacular in the cold, clear dark skies of the UP, especially along hundreds of miles of Lake Superior shoreline. Although unpredictable, the best opportunity for aurora viewing is from fall through spring.
  • Skiers, snowmobilers, snowshoers and winter warriors from ice climbers and fat tire bikers to dog sledders and surfers (yes, surfing Lake Superior in winter is a thing) head to the UP for dependable lake effect snow, wide open spaces and terrain to suit varying levels of expertise. With the snow come events like dog sled and snowmobile races and celebrations of winter that include a wife-carrying contest and an outhouse race on skis.
  • After (or instead of) a long day of braving the elements, warm up in a hot sauna, relax by a roaring fire, and get cozy in a toasty cabin or one-of-a-kind B&B.
