03/12/14 Marquette, Michigan– Carl Leander Johnson the voice of the Negaunee Miners and his partner Jesse Anderson were in Marquette, Michigan tonight to bring you an exciting basketball game as the Negaunee Miners Boys go up against the Ironwood Red Devils for the title of Regional Champions on Sunny.FM.
The tip was won by Negaunee and they scored to take the first lead of the night. The Red Devils had an answer and tied the score with the next shot. The Miners played some suffocating defense, and junior Robert Loy scored five five of their first eight points en route to a Miner 8-4 lead halfway through the first quarter. Negaunee pushed their lead to double digits by the two minute mark and ended the quarter up 11 (17-6) against Iron Wood.
The Miners started the second quarter on an Eric Lori three-pointer to take a 14 point lead. Lori continued his impressive play, and recorded four steals in the second quarter as Negaunee pushed their lead to as much as 18 during the first half. Negaunee, who led 25-11 with three minutes left in the quarter, finished the quarter on a 7-2 run and took a 32-13 point lead into halftime over the Red Devils in Marquette, Michigan.
The Miners continued their dominating performance to start off the third quarter and, behind some impressive plays from Jay Lori and Robert Loy, pushed their lead to 24 points (39-15) over Ironwood. The Red Devils continued to struggle against the intense Negaunee defense and fell even further back trailing 45-18 halfway through the third. Negaunee maintained their level of play, and pushed it to a (then) game-high 32 point lead against the Red Devils 50-18. The last two minutes of the quarter ended on a 7-3 run by the Miners, and they went into the fourth quarter up 57-21 on Sunny.FM!
The Red Devils would be first to score in the fourth quarter to trail 57-23 against the Miners. Negaunee spent the first half of the final quarter getting some playing time for sophomores Dylan Tasson & Ben Luke who could potentially see some playing time in significant moments down the road in the playoffs. Once Coach Mike O’Donnell felt he had nothing to gain from leaving in the likes of Tyler Jandron & Eric Lori, he put in the fan-favorites Logan Streeter, Michael Anderson, Michael Hemmila, and Doug “Fresh” Lindblom to finish out the game. The game ended with the Negaunee Miners hoisting up the regional trophy for the FOURTH consecutive year.
The Negaunee Miners defeat the Ironwood Red Devils 70-45 in Marquette, Michigan.
Leading the way for your Negaunee Miners tonight was sophomore power forward Jay Lori (18pts, 7reb, asst) who managed to put up 11 points in the second half alone, and had a very impressive third quarter for the second game in a row. Also chipping in was junior small forward Robert Loy (14pts, 3reb, asst) who played with a confidence that we haven’t seen up until this game. Seniors Eric Lori (12pts, 6assts, 6stls, 2reb, blk) & Tyler Jandron (11pts, 4assts, 2reb, blk) were all over the court defensively and making plays left and right. Jandron drew the assignment of guarding the Red Devils’ best player in Adam Mackey, who scored 30 points on Monday against Norway, and held him to just 11 points with ZERO three-pointers in the game (He made six on Monday). The final scoring for Negaunee was from Zane Radloff (6pts, 9reb, 6assts, stl), Logan Streeter (6pts, 2reb), and Tyler Windahl (3pts, reb).
