Clayton Johnson, Jr.’s 72 Panther and Cutter – Best of Show

Big Bay, Michigan  –  February 22, 2014  –  Snowmobile Enthusiasts gathered on Saturday, February 22, at the Big Bay Motel for the annual Big Bay Antique & Vintage Snowmobile Show.

Although it was snowing and a bit windy, the weather certainly didn’t stop the crowds from coming to Big Bay to check out the vintage snowmobiles and sleds on display.

The Big Bay show is a family fun event and there are always a bunch of events for the kids. Events for the kids included a 120 fun run and turkey bowling! There was a silent auction and a raffles throughout the day, including one to win a 1972 Arctic Cat Cheetah 340 snowmobile.

The Best in Show trophy went to Clayton Johnson for his beautiful ’72 Panther and Cutter. Clayton’s father bought this Panther brand new back in the day! Some of the coolest sleds at this show have been in the family for generations.

“It’s a trip back in time,” said Larry Lawrence, whose ’72 Arctic Cat Puma and ’69 Arctic Cat Sled took the Best Cutter Combo Trophy. “Seeing all these old sleds brings me right back to my childhood.”

Larry’s ’69 Arctic Cat Sled was bought new by his grandpa and he remembers being a small child sitting on his grandfather’s and father’s snowmobiles. It isn’t just the history of the model or the manufacturer that is interesting, it’s the way some sleds have touched several generations in a family.

The event kicked off Friday despite the winter storm the night before, with a vintage ride to the old Dodge City logging camp where a hot dinner was served before the ride back to the Big Bay Motel. Although it was snowing and a bit windy, a good time was had by many.

The show is sponsored by the Antique & Vintage Snowmobile Association of Big Bay and the Big Bay 550 Snowmobile Club. All proceeds from the event are used to assist local families in need.
